Bajo Village: Sea Gypsies

Updated: Oct 26

The "Bajo village" in Kendari refers to the Bajo (Bajau) people, also known as sea nomads, who have a strong presence in the coastal areas, particularly in Petoaha Village. These are fishing communities, some of whom still live a traditional maritime lifestyle on land or partly over water, while others have increasingly moved into the city for welfare reasons. Visitors can find an authentic glimpse of their culture through their connection to the sea, which includes unique livelihood strategies, a deep relationship with marine life, and skilled seafaring abilities.
